When Stella Was Very, Very Small by Marie-Louise Gay

Published Groundwood Books 2009

The reasons why I like this book, and chose it as Book of the Week:

It’s imaginative.

Stella isn’t only very, very small, but she’s also really, really adorable (I don’t think I’ve seen a cuter character than her).
The artwork is beautiful, and can tell Stella’s story on its own.
It shows readers what the world looks like from a very small perspective – a child’s perspective.  For example adults view their backyard as just that, small children like Stella may view it as a wild jungle waiting to be explored.
It shows children the natural progression of growing up, something they all eventually face.

I love that Stella’s a brave character – facing everything from the jungles of her back yard to her neighbors sand storm deserts.
